We wonder. Hence we ask.

We have been a pure Beast Master since our mid-40s. We have loved it. Our group has loved it. Though they did love the short, short period we were MM/SV with Clever Traps rank 2, they love us more as deep (as in 45/13/3) BM. We are still very good at the chain-trapping, we know how to deal with the trap time vs. the cooldown. We love when Ferocious Inspiration procs. We would pretty much kill for this spec. Or so we thought...

We have found ourselves considering a hybrid build of lately. And we do not know whether to go 31 in BM or MM, but we know we will have 30 in Survival! And we cannot decide with those 31 points. We have considered two variants, or versions thereof. We are very (possibly) sure about the points in Survival, but we need some ideas about the other 31. The ones we've been considering are:

The 31 Beast Mastery/0 Marksmanship/30 Survival
31/0/30
As we mentioned, we might change details in the BM tree as we see fit, though we are not sure how.

The 0 Beast Mastery/31 Marksmanship/30 Survival
0/31/30
As we mentioned, we might change details in the BM tree as we see fit, though we are not sure how.

It should also be mentioned that we are a bit unsure about Trap Mastery vs. Improved Feign Death. We are not very bothered with FDs resisting, though it happens - like our first attempt at heroic Ramparts... ->Dead hunter<- - but it is mostly survivable.

So? We hope someone will see this and give us some much needed input. Is this valid? Should we be lynched for even considering leaving good old Beast Mastery? Should we just burn lots of gold and try it all out? And as a point to that last suggestion, we have not got our epic flight mount yet, so we are not exactly swimming in gold...

...help?

Not sure what your content goals are, but I gotta be honest, 41/20 is the premiere DPS spec for a reason. Serpent's Swiftness by itself causes enough of a DPS gain to trounce MM and Survival if the gear level is equal.

Also, no matter what spec you are, you should have Mortal Shots. This talent is so crucial that Blizzard is making it even easier to get in the expansion.

Cheers!

From what I understand, a hybrid BM/MM is not going to do as much DPS as a hybrid MM/Surv, I can't remember the exact reasoning, but I do know it has to do with Serpent's Swiftness which is 95% of the reason Beast Mastery is as powerful as it is. And to get 5 points in Serpent's Swiftness, you need 40 points in BM!

That said, you should certainly experiment with what sounds fun to you!

Hybrid builds for anything other than PvP tend to not perform as well. If you're looking to provide utility rather than sustained damage, you could probably get away with it. However, if you're a raiding hunter that is expected to only provide Misdirects and damage, you're probably severely gimping your performance in such a way that you might find yourself replaced.

Variations of a 41/20 (whether the 41 points are in Survival, Marksmanship, or Beast Mastery) build are optimal because of how the trees tend to be set up. You gain the most benefit out of the trees by building around that concept. However, the synergy of any tree with Beast Mastery usually relies on at least 40 points in that tree.

What might work best is to test out what trees appeal to you best and then go from there. If your performance is substandard, you've got your answer. Even though you might lack your mount, the cost of respeccing is easily recovered with a few dailies.

@daniel
I've been told that 41/20 is best, but I can't get over the fact that I feel I end up with too little in BM. But the survival respec is probably more for soloing than anything else, as I'm not a very regular raider. But I seem to have to really consider Mortal Shots... ^^

@Pike
Yeah, that's my thought too. I play a game to have fun, so I might try even if it's bound to gimp my dps. ^^;

@cynra
Thanks for a good overview, and I've heard it before, though have tended to ignore it, because, as I said to Pike, I play this because it is fun. I love BM, but have always wanted to try survival. Perhaps I'll just wait for WotLK and the remakes to the trees that will bring. ^^
